Sidmouth 360

The main sea defences used at sidmouth are :

Breakwaters: Break Water are structures built by the coast for coastal protection to protect an anchorage from weathering. Break Water works by reducing the intensity of the wave, and reducing coastal erosion, so an oncoming wave hits a breakwater and the power of the wave it lost. Deposition can help build up and extend beaches but the break waters stop unprotected parts of the beaches receiving fresh sediment, meaning the unprotected beaches will just shrink.

Sea wall: Sea Wall is a form of hard and strong coastal defence constructed on the inland part of a coast to reduce the effects of strong waves. Sea Walls work by just plainly blocking the wave, they do this well, but they cost a lot of money and brake down over time, and it has to be repaired often.

Rock armour : This is simple form of sea defences, they work similarly to a sea wall, they block the waves. They are placed in front of the sea wall to protect it as it costs alot, but they can be easily eroded.

Explain why a named settlement you have studied can be considered sustainable

BedZED, this settlement can be considered sustainable for many different reasons. BedZED is an eco village; it was purposely created with sustainability being the main target. BedZED's home are eco-friendly homes with many features that make it a much better urban housing development than average UK urban housing developments, the homes are built with extra thick walls that keep the heat in at winter time but keep it cool in summer. The homes have large windows that face the sun, this means that natural light lights up the house and natural heat can warm it, they also have vents on the roofs that capture the wind to ventilate the home in the summer, there is a plant on the roof aswell though that soaks up the rain water and releases it slowly, the rain water is then stored and re-used in for toilet water. All the hot water and part of the electricity comes from one unit found on site, the unit is fuelled by locally sourced wood chippings that would have otherwise gone to waste. The BedZED development has discouraged people to use cars, with limited parking spaces, and people who own electric cars have priority over those who don't, public transport walking and cycling are all encouraged, the development is within a 15 minute walk to a tram lime service and a bus and trainline goes via BedZED.

The Zabaleen

The Zabaleen are Christians that live and work in Cairo, they were made by two groups whom both migrated to Cairo and they joined up to create the Zabaleen. They are known as the "Garbage people".They make a living from collecting and disposing Cairo's waste by feeding it to their pigs and they recycle materials like glass and plastic bottles and they then sell them off as raw materials. It is believed that the Zabaleen recycle 80%-90% of waste which many modern waste managements systems aspire to achieve.

The Zabaleen offer a sustainable solution to waste disposal because they use donkeys to collect some of the waste which means no harmful toxins are let off, they collect the cities waste for very little or even no money, they recycle 80%-90% of the waste which other more major organisations could learn from.

But they face problems, the government ordered that there pigs must be killed because of swine flu, the government also tried to replace the Zabaleen with modern waste disposals but the locals disagreed. The government seem to have a problem with the Zabaleen, there was no case of swine flu in Egypt yet the government still ordered the extermination of the pigs.
